How to Choose the Right Laptop: A Buyer's Checklist

Choosing a laptop can feel overwhelming. This checklist helps you focus on what matters and avoid paying for features you will not use.
Define how you will use it
Office work, study, creative projects and gaming each need different hardware. Write down your main tasks before looking at specifications.
Processor and memory
For everyday use, a recent mid-range processor with at least 8 GB of RAM is a sensible starting point. Heavier work such as video editing benefits from 16 GB or more.
Storage
Solid-state drives (SSD) are much faster than traditional hard drives. 256 GB is a minimum; 512 GB gives more room.
Screen and battery
Look at screen size, resolution and brightness. For portability, check independent battery tests rather than relying only on manufacturer claims.
Ports and build quality
Make sure it has the ports you need, and read reviews about keyboard, hinges and cooling.
Warranty and support
Check the warranty length, what it covers and how to claim it before you buy.
